Stewardship
Ontario & Continuous Improvement Fund Working to
Develop Markets for Plastic Packaging—Looking
for Blue Box Plastics
as Feedstock
Building on the success of the glass market development
fund, Stewardship Ontario and the Continuous Improvement
Fund (CIF) are working to develop and deliver market
development assistance for rigid and film plastic packaging.
Stewardship Ontario and the CIF have committed $2.4
million and $1.9 million respectively for demonstration
projects intended to develop up to 25,300 tonnes per
year of new processing capacity for plastics streams
one through seven, where bottle grades of PET and HDPE
have been removed through MRF processing.
Having
selected two plastic processors—EFS Plastics (Elmira)
and Entropex (Sarnia)—through an RFP process,
the next step is to begin working with municipalities
through 2010 to source a supply of plastics captured
in the municipal recycling system. Toward that end the
CIF has begun a series of monthly conference calls for
municipal representatives to discuss the plastics re-processing
matters. In addition to this project funding, the Stewardship
Ontario Board has committed support to build on this
initiative over the coming years.
