IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PHASE 1 STEWARDS
Filing Your March Steward’s Report
As a Phase 1 steward, you will be getting ready to file your ‘Annual 2009 MHSM Steward’s Report’ due by the end of March. Stewardship Ontario developed this Need-to-Know to provide easy-to-follow steps to assist you in your preparations and to show you how we’ve minimized many reporting requirements.
You will know that the nine materials designated under Phase 1 of the MHSW program are included in the broader consolidated program consisting of 22 materials. If you submitted all four quarters of your 2009 report, in many cases, we’ve been able to transfer your data into the March report which will simplify the filing process for you.
In other cases, where material definitions have been expanded under the consolidated program, we have to ask a few additional questions when you file. We’ll use your answers to estimate your sales for 2009 under the expanded definitions.
If you are responsible for any of these materials, data will be transferred into your March report:
- Aerosols containing Solvents (other solvents are a sub-category of Flammables)
- Aerosols containing Paints and Coatings
- Antifreeze (Packaged)
- Oil Containers
- Oil Filters
- Paints & Coatings (those not contained in aerosols)
- Pressurized Containers
The table below, Preparing to File Your March Report, describes what information you need to gather and what to do when you file.
If you are a steward for any of these materials, unfortunately the data can not be transferred.
- Batteries (single use dry cell)
- Fertilizers
- Pesticides
For these materials, stewards will need to manually input the 2009 sales data. For stewards who report on batteries, please refer to the battery worksheet, which can be used to convert all battery sizes to weight in kilograms.
New Consolidated Materials
Data for any of the broader list of consolidated materials, e.g., mercury devices, portable fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, etc. will be entered manually into the system.

Note to table: Stewardship Ontario appreciates you may not have tracked this information in 2009. Please provide your best estimate for the Ontario market based on the information that is reasonably accessible to you. Ideally this would be drawn from Ontario sales data but if this information is not available, feel free to draw on other sources of information (such as national sales data) to generate an estimate.
The New Online Steward Reporting System
Supporting documents to introduce you to the new steward reporting system and guide you through the filing process will be provided later this month. As mentioned in a previous Need-to-Know, before March 1 we will send steward primary contacts an email that will contain your user ID and a temporary password. Once you enter the new reporting system, it will ask you to update your password to one of your choice.
