Collection Sites (non-municipal)

The MHSW Program is designed to collect consumer hazardous and special material so it can be recycled or disposed of safely. The program has two phases. Phase 1 began in July 2008 and included nine materials. The consolidated phase begins July 1, 2010 and includes 22 materials (including the original nine).

Under Phase 1 of the MHSW Program, the commercial sector provides a valued and convenient service to people across Ontario. Your service allows Ontarians to do what they can for the environment by dropping off specific household hazardous and special wastes for proper recycling and disposal. This service also allows Stewardship Ontario to improve public access to collection events and locations so that all Ontarians can “do the right thing” when it comes to municipal hazardous and special waste materials.

Phase 1 non-municipal collection sites include commercial and retail outlets such as automobile service stations (that accept oil filters, oil containers and antifreeze from ‘do-it-yourselfers’) and retailers who have a drop off for single use batteries, paint and paint containers. There are also many service stations and retailers that accept empty propane tanks in exchange for full ones. And it’s becoming more popular for companies to offer employees a MHSW ‘collection event day’ similar to what municipalities do for their residents.

Expanding to 22 material categories under the Consolidated MHSW program provides further opportunities for private operators to become involved in the collection of hazardous and special material from consumers.

How can my business/store get involved?

Stewardship Ontario is keen to expand its business relationship with the commercial sector and other organizations to make it more convenient for Ontarians to find locations to recycle or dispose of the designated waste in a proper manner.

Collection sites will be established by either extending current collection agreements or through request for proposal (RFP), request for quotation (RFQ) processes or other vendor selection processes.  Stewardship Ontario will release RFPs and RFQs early in 2010.
