‘Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste’ is the official name of the program but we also call it the ‘Do What You Can’ Program. As the name suggests, we ask consumers to do what they can when it comes to dealing with leftover products such as paint, solvents, antifreeze, single use batteries and the empty containers. In July 2010, this list will expand to include aerosols, pharmaceuticals, all types of batteries and many other products. Consumers can visit the ‘Do What You Can’ website (www.dowhatyoucan.ca) to search for nearby locations to take leftover MHSW materials.

As a retailer you and your customers may have questions about the Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste Program.

This waste collection program is designed to collect hazardous and special materials when they are discarded or at end-of-life so they can be recycled or disposed of safely.

The program is being implemented in phases. Phase one began in July 2008 and includes nine materials, e.g., paint, single use batteries and antifreeze. The consolidated phase begins July 1, 2010 and includes 22 materials (including the original nine).

As a retailer you as well as your customers may have questions about the MHSW program. In this section you will find general information about Phase 1 including a brochure, fact sheet and other materials that you can display or handout to your customers.  We will update this material early in 2010 to include information about the expanded (consolidated) program.

Interested in becoming an MHSW Collection Site?

Under Phase 1 of the MHSW Program the commercial sector provides a valued and convenient service to people across Ontario, allowing them to ‘do what they can’ for the environment by dropping off specific household hazardous and special wastes for proper recycling and disposal.  Once collected, Stewardship Ontario does the rest. We see that the waste is either reused, recycled or disposed of properly.

With many more materials being collected, there are even more opportunities to get involved. If your store is interested in becoming an MHSW collection site please visit the
non-municipal collection section of the website.
