Transporters /Processors

Feb. 1, 2011 - New Battery Incentive Program for Single-Use Dry Cell Batteries in Ontario Launches Today

Stewardship Ontario, the organization that manages the Orange Drop Program, is pleased to launch a new Battery Incentive Program for single-use dry cell batteries which will make it more appealing for independent service providers to set-up public-facing Battery Drop Zones (collection sites and collection activities) throughout the province.

This new program, which launches February 1, 2011, is for the collection, transportation, sorting and processing of MHSW Phase 1 batteries from the public as waste generator. The objective is to effectively and efficiently increase the diversion of batteries from landfill – ensuring batteries are recycled to recover the highest possible amount of reusable materials.

There are two incentive components to this new Battery Incentive Program:

- Battery Recovery Incentive (BRI): A payment model that has been established by Stewardship Ontario to achieve collection/transportation objectives set by Stewardship Ontario to approved Transporters for the collection, recovery and delivery of batteries to an approved battery Processor.

- Battery Processing Incentive (BPI): A payment model that has been established by Stewardship Ontario for the sorting, processing and disposition reporting of batteries in accordance with the MHSW Program Processor Standards.

View our detailed Program Guide, that describes the registration, approval and reporting processes for Transporters and Processors of single-use dry cell batteries in Ontario, as well as the incentive rates and other key components.

We are looking to increase the number of collection sites and activities to make it as easy as possible for the public to ‘Make the Drop’ and drop off their used household batteries during their daily routine. We hope that you will participate in this program and be our partner in this endeavour.

Sincerely,

Tamara Burns

Service Providers & Incentive Programs

Transporters and Processors play an integral role in the MHSW Program and are the link that make it possible for Stewardship Ontario to follow through on our commitment to divert waste from landfills and incineration.

Currently, we operate two incentive programs for Transporters and Processors:

Registration & Approval

Registering with Stewardship Ontario is the first required step toward approval to be an MHSW Transporter and/or Processor. Once approved your firm will be placed on the list of Registered & Approved Transporters and Processors for the applicable program.

The first step in this process is to register by creating an online profile. Once you have registered Stewardship Ontario will connect with your primary contact.

If it is determined by your organization and Stewardship Ontario that there is a “good fit” you will be asked to
complete the application process.
