Multi-Family Waste Audit Program

Multi-family waste audits were conducted in accordance with provisions of the Blue Box Program Plan and closed tenders for 2005, 2006, and 2007. The sampling methodology was developed in conjunction with partner municipalities, WDO and the University of Toronto’s Statistical Consulting Service.

To complete the audits, Stewardship Ontario contracted with independent auditors who were trained to conduct audits that are consistent with Stewardship Ontario’s waste audit methodology and reporting protocol.

2007 Single Family Audits

Waste Audits for 2007 were completed in the City of London, City of Thunder Bay, City of Toronto and Halton Region. They were selected with a view toward covering programs representative of waste generating behaviour across the province and filling in some of the gaps in the municipal groupings matrix (e.g. large urban, small urban, rural regional, etc).

The fieldwork was done by 2cg Inc, AET Consultants, Integrated Environmental Waste Services and Jacques Whitford Ltd., all retained under a competitive bid process. Waste was separated and weighed according to the 89 categories set out in the tender in four audit periods:

Winter
January 1 to March 9, 2007
Spring
April 2 to June 1, 2007
Summer
June 25 to September 21, 2007
Fall
October 1 to December 7, 2007

Multi-Family Waste Audit Results

Results for the waste audits are posted as they are approved by the host municipality and reviewed by Stewardship Ontario. The results are presented on a kilograms per household per week (kg/hh/wk) basis. Generation and recovery figures are rounded to the nearest 100th of a kilogram. Therefore, adding presented figures together may not result in an exact match with the subtotals and totals shown.
