Single Family Waste Audit Program

Single family waste audits are being conducted in accordance with provisions of the Blue Box Program Plan and closed tenders for 2005, 2006, and 2007. The sampling methodology was developed in conjunction with partner municipalities, WDO and the University of Toronto’s Statistical Consulting Service.

To complete the audits, Stewardship Ontario contracts with independent auditors, who take part in a waste audit training session preparing to conduct audits that are consistent with Stewardship Ontario’s waste audit methodology and reporting protocol.

2007 Single Family Audits

Waste audits for 2007 were copmleted in the City of London, District of Muskoka, City of Thunder Bay, Halton Region and Centre and South Hastings. They were selected with a view toward covering programs representative of waste generating behaviour across the province and filling in some of the gaps in the municipal groupings matrix (e.g. large urban, small urban, rural regional, etc).

The fieldwork was done by 2cg Inc, AET Consultants, Integrated Environmental Waste Services and Jacques Whitford Ltd., retained under a competitive bid process. Waste was separated and weighed according to the 89 categories set out in the tender in four audit periods:

2006 Single Family Audits

Waste audits were conducted in seven communities for the 2006 series.

The audits took place in Niagara Region, City of Hamilton, City of Peterborough, Sault Ste. Marie, Simcoe County, Town of Blue Mountains and West Nipissing. They were selected with a view toward covering programs representative of waste generating behaviour across the province and filling in some of the gaps in the municipal groupings matrix (e.g. large urban, small urban, rural regional, etc).

The 2006 fieldwork was conducted by five companies retained under a competitive bid process. The companies include Wasteaway, Jacques Whitford Ltd., Integrated Environmental Waste Services, Associated Environmental Technologies and Totten Sims and Hubicki Associates.

As in 2005, the audits were conducted at four intervals throughout the year in order to capture seasonal variation.

2005 Single Family Audits

In 2005, single family waste audits were completed in Durham, Essex-Windsor, London, North Glengarry, Ottawa, Sudbury and Toronto.

Waste samples were collected from 100 households in each municipality, segmented into 10 groups of 10 households, as identified by the host municipality. Waste was separated and weighed according to the 67 categories set out in the tender in four audit periods:

Single Family Waste Audit Results

Results for the waste audits are posted as they are approved by the host municipality and reviewed by Stewardship Ontario. The results are presented on a kilograms per household per week (kg/hh/wk) basis. Generation and recovery figures are rounded to the nearest 100th of a kilogram. Therefore, adding presented figures together may not result in an exact match with the subtotals and totals shown.
