The Blue Box Program Plan directs Stewardship Ontario - through the Effectiveness & Efficiency Fund - to complete a series of residential waste audits in single family and multi-residential households, every year.
The audits provide accurate information that is vital to the Blue Box system. These data are used to develop estimates of waste generation across the province for each blue box material category and by various waste streams.
Stewardship Ontario uses data from waste audits to:
- assess waste generation for setting fees (with the stewards’ reports as the cross check);
- determine the recovery performance of existing programs; and
- assess opportunities and priorities for recovery improvement.

Additional Audits
Additional audits (not under the auspices of the Stewardship Ontario Waste Audit Program) have been completed or are in progress as part of other projects. These data will be posted when available.
This waste audit program would not have been possible without the cooperation and assistance of the partner municipalities, solid waste management companies, solid waste facilities, waste haulers, and apartment managers and owners in partner municipalities across Ontario who agreed to participate in the program. Stewardship Ontario would like to thank everyone involved for their assistance and support.
