Fees and Payments

Rates

Each “Designated Blue Box Waste” (DBBW) material is associated with an annual fee, which is approved by both Stewardship Ontario’s and Waste Diversion Ontario’s Board of Directors, before being programmed into WeRecycle, our online reporting system. This system automatically calculates how much you are required to pay based on the amount of each DBWW material used in packaging or printed materials during the data year (i.e., the year that you collect the data from to report in your obligation year).

Invoices & Payments

As soon as you submit your report through WeRecyle, our online reporting system will automatically generate and send an invoice to your e-mail address. If you have questions, or if you don’t receive your invoice, contact us at 1-888-288-3360 or werecycleatstewardshipontario [dot] ca.

Program Years

 

2011 Program Year

Payments for the 2011 program year are due on a quarterly basis for the preceding three months, and payable in 25% increments on:
  • April 30, 2011 – January to March 2011
  • June 30, 2011 – April to June 2012
  • September 30, 2011 - July to September 2011
  • December 1, 2011 - October to December 2011
These payment deadlines apply to any stewards who are notified they are obligated on or before December 28, 2010. If you are notified that you are obligated later than December 28, 2010 then the payment deadlines are follows:

After the first payment is made, the regular schedule of payments shall apply. Stewards will base their 2011 obligation on 2010 data for Designated Blue Box Waste. The de minis exemptions (sales and tonnage-based exemption thresholds) are also based on the 2010 calendar year.
 
Under the de minis exemption, you do not have to register or report or pay fees if you do not have $2 million in gross annual sales in Ontario in the data year. You do have to register and report, but you do not have to pay fees, if you had less than 15,000 kg of DBBW packaging and printed material in the data year.
 
Stewards that fail to pay fees as set out in the installment schedule (above) will be subject to penalties and interest charges. For more information, refer to the penalties and interests section of the Rules.

 

Reporting Calculators

Stewardship Ontario has authorized the use of several calculator tools which are available for defined lists of products in specific sectors. In the absence of actual packaging data for their Blue Box Waste, stewards may opt to use these calculators to estimate the weight of materials for which they are obligated.
 
To use any calculator:
  • Download the calculator application form 
  • Complete the form
  • E-mail your completed form as an attachment to: werecycleatstewardshipontario [dot] ca.
